Before using our products, please read the safety guide provided with our wheels for important safety information.
Amflex Abrasive Products’ wheels are manufactured with only high quality abrasives, resins and fiberglass reinforcing, keeping the users safety as our top concern.
WARNING: GRINDING WHEELS AND CUTOFF WHEELS ARE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS WHEN USED IMPROPERLY!
Wheel Speed: DO NOT EXCEED THE MAXIMUM OPERATING SPEED for the wheel. Using a speed higher than what the wheel is rated for, is a common cause of wheel breakage. Check the machine speed with a tachometer, before each new wheel is mounted.
Safety Guards: Check to ensure that a properly designed safety guard is in place and is in good condition.
Grinding Machines: The user should be familiar with the machines’ operating instructions. All grinders should be inspected before using to check for any damage to the machine, its’ flanges or safety guards. The operating speed of the machine should be compared to the max rpm of the wheel being used. Check for proper type and size of flanges, verifying that they are flat and free from burrs or wear.
Eye and Body Protection: Always wear impact resistance safety glasses and protective clothing.
The following is not intended to be an all inclusive list, but should serve as a guide to the care, use and protection when operating abrasive wheels.
Proper care:
- Do always handle and store wheels in a careful manner.
- Do unpack wheels upon receipt: do not leave in the shipping carton.
- Do store wheels on a flat, smooth, solid surface in a dry area.
- Do not store wheels on their edge.
- Do not store wheels in a damp area.
Proper Use:
- Do visually check all wheels for possible damage before mounting.
- Don’t use a wheel that has been dropped or damaged.
- Do make sure the machine speed does not exceed the operating speed marked on the wheel.
- Don’t ever exceed the maximum operating speed established for the wheel.
- Do check mounting flanges for equal and correct minimum diameter.
- Don’t use mounting flanges on which the bearing surfaces are not clean, flat and free from burrs.
- Don’t tighten the mounting nut excessively.
- Don’t force a wheel onto the machine or alter the size of the arbor hole. If the arbor hole is too tight or too loose, get a different wheel that fits.
- Do make sure work piece is held firmly in place. Clamp work when using non-reinforced wheels.
- Do always use a properly designed safety guard.
- Do allow newly mounted wheels to run at operating speed with guard in place for at least one minute before cutting.
- Don’t grind on the side of the wheel.
- Don’t start the machine until the wheel guard is in place.
- Don’t stand directly in front of a cutoff wheel whenever the machine is started.
- Don’t cut material for which the wheel is not designed.
- Don’t jam, cock, bend or pinch the wheel.
Proper protection:
- Do always select the right wheel for your application.
- Do always use wheel guards and check for well maintained equipment.
- Do always wear impact resistant safety glasses or some type of eye protection when grinding.
- Don’t cut without proper ventilation and personal protective clothing.
- Do remember that the wheel can break during operation and can be dangerous when used or handled improperly.
The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) publishes a document called “Safety Requirements for the Use, Care and Protection of Abrasive Wheels” which lists the standards for the proper use, handling and storage of abrasive wheels. Failure to comply can result in serious physical injury. Included in this ANSI B7.1 Standard are:
Section 1: Scope and Definitions Section 2: Handling and Storage Section 3: General Machine Conditions Section 4: Safety Guards Section 5: Flanges Section 6: Mounting Section 7: Standard Speeds Section 8: Special Speeds Section 9: General Operating Rules Section 10: Mounted Wheels
It is the users responsibility to refer to and comply with ANSI B7.1 and OSHA safety requirements. A copy of the ANSI B7.1 Standard may be purchased with our abrasive wheels.
